The SMARTS Mission:
“To integrate the arts into the lives of our most underprivileged students by involving the learning communities of Youngstown State University, the arts organizations in our region, and our schools in cooperative projects designed to enrich the environment and promote achievement through fi ne and performing arts thus positively impacting students, families, and the community. Literacy is at the core of the SMARTS Mission.”
The SMARTS Vision:
“A quality arts education program of distinction that provides Youngstown State University and its partners with opportunities for civic engagement and used as a model for community outreach in the arts for other communities throughout the country.”
The SMARTS Center houses a public gallery, visual arts classroom, two private practice rooms, a large and a small music ensemble room, workshop area, and SMARTS administrative offi ce. Since its move to the new 8,000 sq. ft. facility in downtown Youngstown, SMARTS has offered after-school, summer and weekend programming to thousands of children in our area. SMARTS classes include playwriting, dance, visual arts, music and theater for students from kindergarten through high school. Classes are taught by YSU students & faculty, local artists, art teachers, and visiting artists. SMARTS is a living/learning laboratory for YSU education majors.
